There has been a steady increase in the number of dial-through telephony fraud cases and it has started to attract international attention, as recently reported on by BBC News & other national & international news agencies. We are aware of multiple cases where a business has come back into the office on a Monday morning only to find their telephony system has been hacked and used to make unauthorised expensive international calls. On average the cost of an attack is estimated at £10,000 but there have been reported cases where the sum has reached £50,000, which can often be devastating for small businesses.

Guidance and advise for customers

There are some simple steps you can take to help you stay protected from fraudsters. These are:

  • Report any dial-through telephony fraud to the Police as this is a suspected criminal offence.  

  • Choose a complex voicemail password of at least six digits, making it more difficult for a hacker to detect. 

  • Change your voicemail passwords frequently.

  • Do not use obvious passwords such as an address, birth date, phone number, or repeating or successive numbers, i.e. 000000, 123456. 

  • Record announcements regularly to ensure the greeting is yours.

  • Be aware that hackers tend to attack voice mailboxes at the start of weekends or holidays.

  • If possible consider blocking international calls.

  • Consider disabling the remote notification, auto-attendant, call-forwarding, and out-paging capabilities of voicemail if these features are not used.
